Internal links are not just for PageRank theater. For generative engine optimization (GEO), they are how crawlers and retrieval systems discover which URLs actually answer buyer prompts. If your cornerstone guides sit behind a JS shell or a dead-end orphan graph, citation systems never see them.

Why internal links matter for AI visibility
Answer engines and AI fetchers still lean on the open web graph:
- Links from crawlable HTML pass discovery signals that a sitemap alone cannot
- Contextual anchors help models map entities to the right URL
- Orphan pages and UUID-only paths rarely become citation defaults
- A clean hub-and-spoke graph concentrates authority on pages you want cited

Build a GEO hub, not a maze
Design three layers:
- Category hubs — evergreen explainers (what GEO is, how to measure visibility, crawler setup)
- Comparison spokes — vs Profound, Peec, Otterly, and name-collision pages
- How-to spokes — robots.txt, sitemaps, share-of-voice scorecards, competitor benchmarks
Every new EN cornerstone should earn at least:
- 2–3 contextual links from existing hubs
- 1 link from a related how-to published in the last 30 days
- A return link back to the hub with a descriptive anchor (not “click here”)
Avoid linking only from SPA chrome that crawlers never parse. The link must appear in server-rendered article HTML.
Anchors that help citation systems
Write anchors like a librarian, not a marketer:

- Weak: “this guide” / “learn more” / naked URLs with no context

What not to link (yet)
Keep thin or non-SSR routes out of the public graph until they return real HTML:

A practical weekly linking checklist

- Add two contextual links from older hubs into the new page
- Add one outbound contextual link from the new page to a related how-to
- Confirm the linked URLs return article HTML without JavaScript

Track before/after on:
- Crawl hits on hub vs spoke URLs
- Indexation of newly linked spokes

- Whether comparison prompts resolve to your preferred URL
If mention rate rises but the wrong URL is cited, fix the graph: strengthen anchors to the preferred spoke and demote confusing lookalikes.
